11th July 2008: Sublime dining

We do up the theatre/media room and reconfigure the kitchen but then forget to overhaul our fine dining zone.

The atmosphere of a dining room can have significant effect on those who live there and those who visit. Make it a welcoming zone and even consider using your favourite restaurant as a model for your refurbishment.

If you desire a formal look, a large table with beautifully upholstered chairs, opulent soft curtains and thick carpet will enhance the sense of occasion and will ensure you have a stylish area to host that special dinner party. The warm glow of an open fire place will add ambience during the cooler months. Down lights that can be dimmed are an excellent choice when considering lighting. They are adaptable to different occasions and do not date easily.

If your dining area needs to be multi-purpose so kids can eat there too, try going for a more modern, simple look with a chrome and glass table for example and funky plastic chairs. Combine these with practical flooring and curtains that can easily be shampooed or wiped clean. And make sure you ban the television from this room, so conversation can flow.

Other ideas to make the most of this special space include hanging big mirrors which not only make the room seem larger but reflect soft light like candles or lamps. There is a comprehensive range these days to suit any wall and budget!
